Chasing Margie by Steve Lindahl

Howard and Emma Gladstone are at their summer lake house in the early twentieth century, when their daughter, Margie, disappears. The police suspect she’s been kidnapped, but there is no ransom note. Despite an enormous effort on land and underwater, no sign of Margie is found. Yet the search continues, pursued at first by Howard then by his descendants.

Ninety-five years later, in 2018, Sarah Duncan meets a woman who claims to have discovered DNA evidence indicating Sarah is descended from the missing Margie Gladstone. Sarah is a lower middle class, thirty-year-old woman, who lives paycheck to paycheck. Her life consists primarily of working at a clothing store and taking care of her senile mother. Could she obtain a small portion of the Gladstone fortune? What would the money mean to the quality of her life? How can she find out if any of this is possible? And most importantly—what happened to Margie?

Chasing Margie: A case that wouldn't stay cold is set at Lake Hopatcong, NJ and in New York, spanning the years from 1923 to 2019.
